India launches cryogenic rocket

India has successfully launched a 1,982-kg communications satellite using an indigenous cryogenically-powered rocket.

The Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV-D5), blasted off from Sriharikota in the southern state of Andhra Pradesh on Sunday.

The GSLV-D5 put the satellite into a perfect orbit after a 17-minute flight.
