Mountaineer: Everest avalanche hit at 'dangerous spot'

At least 12 people, believed to be local Nepalese Sherpa guides, have been killed by an avalanche on Mount Everest.

The accident is believed to be the single biggest loss of life on the slopes of the world's highest mountain.

British mountaineer Alan Hinkes said the area the avalanche hit, the Khumbu Ice Fall, was "a dangerous spot" which should never be "underestimated."

He told BBC Radio 5 live's Breakfast: "You've got to go through this chaotic jumble of huge blocks of ice.... all the icefall itself can collapse and avalanche around you."
