In a break with tradition China's President Xi Jinping is heading to South Korea for his first visit to the Korean peninsula, rather than North Korea.

Beijing and Seoul forged diplomatic ties in 1992, but Pyongyang always came first on the itinerary of a visiting Chinese head of state.
