The awkward Apec family photo - a history

A long-standing tradition at the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) summit is the "family photo" - also known as the "silly shirts" moment - where the leaders pay tribute to the culture of the host country.

It began in 1993 when US President Bill Clinton handed out leather bomber jackets at the summit at Blake Island, Washington.

Since then, they have posed together in everything from Javan batik shirts in Indonesia in 1994 to flowing chamantos in Chile in 2004.

This year, the Philippines put everyone in "barong" shirts.
