Sri Lanka: Tear gas and water cannon fired at protesters

A demonstration in Sri Lanka outside the president's house to protest dire food, fuel and power shortages turned violent on Thursday night.

The protest outside Gotabhaya Rajapaksa's home began peacefully, but participants say police fired tear gas, water cannons and also beat people present. A number have also been detained.

Protesters retaliated against the police by pelting them with rocks.
