India's complicated relationship with Facebook

An Indian prime minister is heading to Silicon Valley for the first time in 30 years to enlist support in boosting the country's digital infrastructure.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to bring up his ambitious Digital India plan. He sees technology as a tool to address India's social and economic challenges.

He will meet tech titans Facebook, Google, Apple, Adobe and Microsoft. Local media has hyped Mr Modi's Q&A session at Facebook in particular.

Facebook's Internet.org initiative aims to promote affordable access to selected internet services.

Critics doubt whether collaboration would be practical without addressing net neutrality, India's sluggish internet speed and "censorship" concerns.

BBC Monitoring assesses why the relationship between India and Facebook is not as simple as it appears to be.
