North Korean ruling party promotes son of Kim Jong-il

On Tuesday the youngest son of the North Korean leader, Kim Jong-il was made a military general.

Now he has been appointed to two senior posts in the country's ruling Workers' Party, having never previously held any public position.

His new jobs are being widely seen as confirmation that he is being prepared to eventually inherit power.

China, North Korea's main ally, has congratulated the party for the successful election of a new leadership body.
