Philippines sailors given lessons in how to beat Somali pirates

The Philippines provides about one in three of the world's seafarers and, according to government figures, more than 700 Filipinos have been kidnapped by Somali pirates since 2006.

Such is the extent of the problem that the Philippine government has now made it mandatory for any of its citizens who wants to work at sea to first undertake some form of anti-piracy training.

One of the training managers, Angelo Tagle, spoke to the BBC about the key lessons they are trying to get across and why so many of his countrymen and women are prepared to put themselves at risk of pirate attack.
