International talks held to discuss end of Basque Eta

An internationally-backed conference seen as a possible prelude to the dissolution of the militant Basque separatist group Eta has opened in northern Spain.

Those attending include ex-UN chief Kofi Annan, but the Spanish government is not officially represented.

Former Irish PM Bertie Ahern and Sinn Fein president Gerry Adams are attending the conference in San Sebastian to share their experiences of the ending of the Northern Irish conflict.

Mr Ahern said that a "just and lasting" peace was obtainable in the Basque Country.
