Thousands of people have attended the biggest anti-government rally in the Russian capital Moscow since the fall of the Soviet Union, with smaller protests staged in St Petersburg and other cities.

The demonstrators wanted to voice their concerns about allegations of ballot-rigging in the recent parliamentary elections, with many demanding a re-run of the vote.

Bridget Kendall has been examining the impact this may have on Vladimir Putin, the ruling United Russia party's candidate, as he prepares for presidential elections scheduled for March 2012.
