Cockroach infestation hits Naples

The city of Naples is battling an infestation of large red cockroaches brought on by the unseasonably warm weather and unhygienic conditions, health officials have said.

Sewers have been sprayed with poison to try and hold off roaches, which can be up to seven centimetres long.

Experts said there is no danger to the health of residents, but the infestation has reignited a debate about problems with waste disposal in the city.

Rubbish being left out overnight for early morning pick-up was said to be making the infestation worse.
