The Lucerne Carnival in Switzerland takes on the god of winter

The Swiss city of Lucerne is staging the annual ugly masks carnival to scare the winter away and welcome spring.

The city transforms during the festival, with decorations, music and crowds of revellers taking part in the celebrations.
