Merkel calls for 'economic co-ordination' in talks with Hollande

German chancellor Angela Merkel has called for greater co-ordination of economic policy among EU nations, at a meeting with the French president in Paris.

Despite their different approaches to tackling economic problems. the talks were aimed at showing unity and kick-starting growth and creating jobs.

But the meeting was overshadowed by more bad economic news - unemployment in France has increased by 12% in one year.
