Divisions threaten Bosnia's prospects for EU membership

As Croatia prepares to join the EU at the end of this month, its neighbour Bosnia remains as divided as ever.

Since the end of the war in 1995, when a peace settlement was imposed by outsiders, it has been split into two separate entities.

There is a Bosnian Serb republic and a federation of Bosnian Croats and Muslims, or Bosniaks as they are known.

But even within the federation the day-to-day divisions are as stark as ever, and the EU is now warning that Bosnia risks falling behind the rest of the region.
