G20 summit: 'Differences of opinion' over Syria - Hollande

The G20 summit in St Petersburg has highlighted "differences of opinion" over Syria, French President Francois Hollande has said, but he thanked President Putin for allowing leaders to discuss it.

Speaking at a news conference on the final day of the summit, Mr Hollande said that several countries, including France, have "enough elements and proof" that indicate that President Bashar al-Asaad's regime was behind a poison-gas attack on 21 August in suburbs of Damascus.

He said that although G20 leaders had failed to reach conclusions over possible intervention, there was a demand from the international community that the report from UN inspectors into the incident is published as soon as possible, to determine whether there has been an violation of international law.
