French footballers threaten strike over 'super tax'

French football clubs are threatening to strike unless they are granted exemption from a 75% "super tax" on anyone earning more than one million euros a year.

The tax, which would be paid by the clubs rather than the players, could cost them some 44m euros ($60m) for the two years it is supposed to apply.

Government ministers say it is only fair to apply the tax to football clubs the same way as any other companies whose employees earn more than a million euros.
