'Immediate action' to save Pompeii from further damage

The Italian government has ordered immediate action to try to save the world famous archaeological site at Pompeii from further damage.

The plan was adopted at an emergency meeting, called after the collapse of a series of walls.

Both the United Nations and the European Union had demanded urgent action.

The town of Pompeii, on the outskirts of modern Naples, was destroyed when the nearby volcano, Mount Vesuvius erupted during the Roman era nearly 2,000 years ago.
