Ukraine crisis: Do Crimea referendum figures add up?

EU foreign ministers are due to discuss further sanctions against Russia after a Moscow-backed referendum in Crimea backed a split from Ukraine.

Election officials in Crimea, where pro-Russian forces are in control, said 97% of voters backed joining Russia with turnout at 83%.

The BBC's Ben Brown in Simferopol says a "huge number of people in the minority population - the Tatars and Ukrainians - abstained from the vote", making it difficult to tell if the figures added up.
