Russia 'laughing' at current sanctions

Russia "laughed" at the current sanctions placed on it by the European Union over its treatment of Ukraine, former Belgian Prime Minister Guy Verhofstadt has said.

Mr Verhofstadt, standing for EU Commission president, said a "broader list of sanctions" must be imposed on Moscow, affecting a wider range of "key players".

Speaking to the Today programme, he added that the EU must "develop a strategy" to be less dependent on Russian imports.

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4's Today programme on Thursday 20 March.
