Russia's military bond with Crimea

The preserved war site of the 35th Battery fort is a powerful memorial to Soviet soldiers killed while defending Sevastopol against the Nazis in World War Two.

Here BBC News follows former local tour guide Alexander Ivashevsky as he visits the ruins of the coastal turret battery.

The visit ends at the sea exit from the battery, where many soldiers waited on the rocks in vain to be evacuated.
