The predicted victory of Euro-sceptic parties across member states marks "a bad day for the European Union", the parliament's incumbent president has warned.

Germany's Martin Schulz addressed exit polls which suggest that Marine Le Pen's National Front has come first in France's elections to the European Parliament.

He described the result as "a bad day for the European Union".
