UN human rights boss: Israeli action 'could be war crimes'

Israel's military actions in Gaza "could amount to war crimes" according to UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay.

Speaking at the organisations's emergency session on the situation, she said: "There seems to be a strong possibility that international law has been violated".

At least 649 Palestinians and 31 Israelis have been killed in the past 15 days of fighting, officials say.

Israel launched its offensive on 8 July with the declared objective of stopping rocket fire from Gaza by Hamas militants, whose attacks were also condemned by Ms Pillay.
