Migrant on why he fled 'awful situation' in Syria

Italian police say smugglers who abandoned a cargo ship full of migrants in open waters earned about $3m (£1.9m; €2.5m) from their operation.

The vessel was found drifting in the Mediterranean Sea on Thursday and it was then towed into the Italian port of Corigliano Calabro.

One of the Syrians on board, a dental student, describes how he came to make the dangerous journey.
