Boat carrying 1,800 migrants arrives at Greek port

A ferry carrying about 1,800 migrants arrived at the Greek port of Piraeus on Tuesday evening, a coastguard official said.

The migrants were mostly from Syria hoping to head towards central Europe to escape the war.

The boat was chartered by Greece to help carry more than 4,000 migrants from its overwhelmed eastern Aegean islands, including Lesbos, to the mainland.
