'Risk of escalation' in Ukraine says head of OSCE

There is a "risk of escalation" in Ukraine the head of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), Lamberto Zannier has told BBC HARDtalk.

He said there was no sign of preparations for an offensive, but there had been more systematic violations of the ceasefire.

"We see the use of heavy weapons and we are worried because this could mark the beginning of a phase where we will see more intense fighting," he said.

Describing the situation as a "dangerous conflict," Mr Zannier called for the engagement of the international community.

The OSCE has deployed internationally backed observers to the country to monitor a ceasefire between Ukrainian government troops and pro-Russian separatists.
