Migrant boat deaths is 'the new normal' - UNHCR

The United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) has warned that the number of migrants trying to get to Europe is "a global crisis".

Up to 700 migrants are feared drowned in a series of shipwrecks off the coast of Libya in the last few days, according to the organisation.

The boats sank to the south of Italy on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday as people tried to reach Europe.

The UNHCR's Carlotta Sami described the multiple deaths at sea as "the new normal".
