New Calais asylum plan would be 'migrant magnet'

A deal to allow Calais migrants to apply for UK asylum at a "hotspot" in France - before they reach Britain - would be a magnet for migrants, former British Ambassador to Paris Sir Peter Ricketts has warned.

The warning comes after president of the region, Xavier Bertrand, called for a new system, which would see anyone rejected deported directly to their country of origin.
