WW2 shell blown up on Alderney beach

A World War Two artillery shell discovered by a tourist has been detonated on an Alderney beach.

The visitor from Guernsey spotted the 10.5cm (4.1 inches) high explosive shell in a sand dune at the weekend.

The shell was left in place at the eastern end of Longis Bay, on the south coast of the island.

Guernsey Police's bomb disposal team travelled across and detonated the device at about 14:10 BST on Tuesday.
