Venezuelan music scheme ‘El Sistema’ continues to inspire

José Antonio Abreu is a Venezuelan musician and economist who founded a pioneering network of orchestras for children over 35 years ago.

'El Sistema' was set up with the aim of using music to build a sense of shared values and social improvement among young people and has expanded to several other countries, including England and Scotland.

As the Teresa Carreño Youth Orchestra, formed by El Sistema's alumni, embarks on a European tour, Abreu says the founding principles are as important today as they ever were.
