Thousands of Syrian refugees flee to Turkey

An eyewitness to Friday's violence in northern Syria has told the BBC of an army attack on a village near the town of Jisr al-Shughour.

The man, who has now fled the country, said tanks rolled into a village near his own at dawn and fired on houses where people were still asleep.

Meanwhile, amateur footage has emerged which appears to show a Syrian helicopter firing on people from the skies, although this cannot be verified.

The town is close to the border with Turkey, from where the BBC's Owen Bennett-Jones reports.
