Iran election sees conservatives go head to head

Iran holds parliamentary elections on Friday, but many of the 48 million Iranians eligible to vote have decided not to bother.

It is a straight contest between President Ahmedinejad and Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei - forced to unite in order to defeat the Green Movement in 2009, but whose partnership has since come apart.

Would-be reformers say there is no point standing and are urging their supporters to stay at home, while human rights organisations have reported an increase in the number of activists being arrested in the run-up to the vote.
