Egypt faces uncertain future

After days of protests, Egypt's future looks increasingly uncertain.

The head of Egypt's army has given a TV address, announcing that President Mohammed Morsi is no longer in office.

Gen Abdul Fattah al-Sisi said the constitution had been suspended and the chief justice of the constitutional court would take on Mr Morsi's powers.

The military have vowed to restore order, but it is not clear how a takeover would work or how long the army would be in charge.

The election that brought Mr Morsi to power was Egypt's first democratic vote, taking place in the aftermath of the revolution that removed Hosni Mubarak.

But the increasingly Islamist tone of the Morsi government and the failure to tackle economic problems led to huge protests.
