Iraq museum re-opens early to defy Islamic State

Iraq's national museum in Baghdad has reopened 12 years after it was closed following the American invasion of the country.

The opening was brought forward in response to an Islamic State (IS) video showing statues being destroyed in Mosul.

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi who opened the renovated museum vowed to punish those responsible.

The museum was considered to host one of the world's greatest archaeological collections but officials say that about 15,000 pieces were looted after the invasion in 2003.
