Saddam's tomb destroyed by fighting between Iraqi forces and IS

Saddam Hussein's mausoleum has been almost completely destroyed after fighting between Iraqi forces and Islamic State militants.

The tomb was built in his birthplace, the village of al-Awja near Tikrit.

There has been much fighting around the city as the Iraqi military have been fighting to take it from Islamic State.

The former dictator's body is not there however, the local Sunni population said they had removed it in 2014 and took it to an unknown location, to protect it from being disturbed by the conflict.
