Adaptive optics provide insight into the retina
Joseph Carroll, an associate professor of ophthalmology at the Medical College of Wisconsin, has employed the use of adaptive optics in his research into the retina of eyeballs.
Using this advanced imaging technology, which provides much sharper images than traditional techniques, Mr Carroll has been looking at the retina at the cellular level, including imagery of photoreceptors, photo receptive cells in the retina, in children with albinism.
He has also used this technology to investigate mosaics of photoreceptors to gain a better understanding of disorders like blindness and near-sightedness.
