US government in last minute deal

Republicans and Democrats have finally reached a deal on the US budget, just an hour before a threatened government shutdown.

If an agreement had not been reached, hundreds of thousands of government workers would have been sent home and many institutions - including the Washington Monument - would have closed.

The deal means cuts of almost $40bn, the largest in the country's history.
