The wife of attorney general John Mitchell and an early member of the Committee to Re-Elect the President, Martha Mitchell sounded frequent warnings about the 'dirty deeds' going on at the White House.

But her outsized personality - and rumoured drinking problem - lead most to disregard her reports.

Despite early attempts to silence her - including her claims that she was held against her will in California while her husband flew to DC - Mitchell spoke out often about the Watergate scandal. In 1974, she sat down with David Frost to tell her story on the BBC.
