Sandy brings New York city to a standstill

The storm from hurricane Sandy could extend across an area of one thousand miles and is expected to cause extensive damage and heavy flooding in New York, New Jersey and Virginia.

Forecasters have warned of winds driving a wall of water on to New York city with waves of up to 11 ft high.

New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo said "the worst is still coming". So far 400,000 people have been ordered to leave their homes.
