US winter storm grounds thousands of flights

Parts of the north-east United States have been hit by a major winter storm, with 53 cm (21 inches) of snowfall recorded in one Massachusetts town.

A state of emergency has been declared in New York and New England, with residents urged to stay indoors and thousands of flights cancelled.

In Canada, temperatures of -26C (-14F) were recorded in Montreal and Winnipeg, not including the wind chill factor.
