US health experts: 'We can stop Ebola outbreak'

West Africa's Ebola outbreak is unprecedented but can be stopped, US health experts have told a Congressional panel.

Dr Tom Frieden, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said the institute was sending 50 experts to the four affected countries, as part of an international effort to tackle the outbreak.

He told the BBC's Laura Trevelyan that an experimental serum used on two US aid workers had not been proven to work and was not available in sufficient quantities to supply to the affected African countries. But he said the outbreak could be halted "by tried and true public health measures" such as tracking ill patients' contacts.

"There are definitely more resources needed," he said. "We are not ahead of it, particularly in Liberia and in Lagos. We need to increase the emergency management of it."
