Leonardo DiCaprio tells UN summit 'climate change not a fiction'

The Hollywood actor, Leonardo DiCaprio, has told a UN climate change meeting in New York that climate change was not ''a fiction''.

The star, who has been appointed as a United Nations representative on climate change, said there was ''evidence that accelerated climate change is here, right now''.

''Droughts are intensifying, our oceans are acidifying...we're seeing extreme weather events in the west Antarctic and Greenland ice sheets melting at unprecedented rates,'' he said.

The aim of the meeting is to galvanise 120 member states to sign up to a comprehensive new global climate agreement at talks in Paris next year.
