Why was US citizen Alan Gross jailed in Cuba?

The US and Cuba have struck a prisoner swap deal that involves the release of American Alan Gross and three Cubans, US officials have announced.

Cuba jailed Mr Gross five years ago on charges of trying to set up illegal internet networks on the island.

The US has said his release would remove an impediment to more constructive relations with Cuba.
