New York mayor: 'It's clear that this was an assassination'

New York city mayor Bill de Blasio said the attack on New York's police department should be considered an attack on all New Yorkers.

He told a news conference the police were the "foundation of our society and when they are attacked it is an attack on the very concept of decency".

Two police officers, Liu Wenjin and Raphael Ramos were shot dead by a gunman while they were sitting inside a police car.

The attacker, Ismaaiyl Brinsley, shot and killed himself after running into a subway station.
