The photojournalist who became an 'outlaw'

Over the course of half a century, the photographer, writer and filmmaker Danny Lyon has documented the civil rights movement, outlaw motorcycle gangs and the harsh Texas prison system.

His ‘’full immersion’’ method of working has often been likened to the New Journalism of Tom Wolfe, Truman Capote and Hunter S Thompson and it has yielded some of the most iconic images in American photography.

Now the most comprehensive retrospective of Lyon’s work ever mounted has just opened at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York.

Michael Maher has been speaking to the photographer about his remarkable life behind the lens.
