Trump: Russia inquiry 'witch hunt'

US President Donald Trump has lashed out at the decision to appoint a special counsel to oversee the inquiry into Russian influence on his election.

He told journalists on Thursday: "I respect the move, but the entire thing has been a witch hunt."

Former FBI director Robert Mueller has been selected to lead the inquiry, with the US deputy attorney general saying it was in the public interest to pick an outsider.
