Special counsel to oversee investigations of Trump

US Attorney General Merrick Garland says his justice department is appointing a special counsel to supervise its investigations into former President Donald Trump.

Citing Mr Trump's White House candidacy, America's top prosecutor said such independent lawyers are needed for "certain extraordinary cases".
