Sir Charles Mackerras tribute prom announced

Sir Charles conducted 52 prom concerts between 1961 and 2009

Sunday night's prom at the Royal Albert Hall will be dedicated to conductor Sir Charles Mackerras who died in London last week, organisers have announced.

The Australian had been due to conduct at Sunday's Viennese night with the baton now taken by Vassily Sinaisky.

Dvorak's Slavonic Dance in E minor, opus 72 number 2, will replace a Strauss waltz in honour of Sir Charles's championing of Czech music.

Douglas Boyd will replace Sir Charles in a Mozart and Dvorak prom on 29 July.

He died of cancer aged 84

Boyd will conduct the Scottish Chamber Orchestra's late night prom performances of Dvorak's Serenade in D minor for winds, cello and double bass, opus 44, and Mozart's Gran Partita serenade.

Sinaisky is the BBC Philharmonic's chief guest conductor and will also a conduct a prom of music by Parry, Scriabin and Tchaikovsky with the orchestra on Friday night.
