Trishna director Michael Winterbottom on Indian setting

Director Michael Winterbottom came to mainstream attention in 1996 when he adapted Thomas Hardy's Jude the Obscure.

Now he has returned to a Hardy novel by updating Tess Of the D'Urbervilles and transplanting the story to film and from England to modern day India.

Tess becomes Trishna, played by Freida Pinto of Slumdog Millionaire fame, a poor village girl who falls in love with a rich man.

Speaking to John Wilson on Radio 4's Front Row Winterbottom explained why he changed the context of the story.
