Coldplay album Ghost Stories coasts to number one

Ghost Stories, the latest album by Coldplay, has topped the UK chart and become the fast seller of 2014 so far.

The band's sixth album sold 168,000 copies in its first week on release. The previous fastest seller was Paolo Nutini's Caustic Love on 109,000.

The 20th anniversary edition of Oasis' debut album Definitely Maybe charted at five.

In the singles chart, BBC Sound of 2014-winner Sam Smith earned his third number one with Stay With Me.

The track has been lifted from the 22-year-old's debut album, In The Lonely Hour, which is released tomorrow on 26 May.

"I really poured my heart into this record and I'm just so happy people love this song. Thank you so much," he said.

Both he and Coldplay appeared at the Radio 1 Big weekend in Glasgow.

DJ Mr Probz had to be content in the runner-up spot in the singles chart with Waves at number two. Fuse ODG was in third place with Dangerous Love while last week's chart topper Rita Ora slid to number four.

Classical electronic group Clean bandit followed up their huge hit Rather be with Extraordinary, which completed the top five.

In the album chart Xscape, the posthumous album from Michael Jackson, dropped one place to number two while reunited Beautiful South bandmates Paul Heaton and Jacqui Abbott entered at number three with their new album, What Have We Become. Paloma Faith's A Perfect Contradiction climbed to number four.
