Our live coverage will resume once the rescue mission does.

  2. How did this all happen?published at 17:14 British Summer Time 8 July 2018

The BBC's Oliver Conway looks back on the past two weeks.

The huge search and rescue operation began not long after the boys became trapped. They had entered the caves - a local attraction they'd been to before - on 23 June, after morning football practice.

As they explored, there was a torrential downpour outside and the entrance became blocked. To escape the rising water they moved several kilometres further in - eventually reaching a small area of dry land. Staff from the national park noticed their bicycles left outside and by 01:00 that night the search began.

It was another nine days before the boys were found by two British divers.

The authorities then faced a dilemma - help the boys swim out through narrow water-logged tunnels, or wait until the passages were dry again, which could take months.

Water was pumped out and oxygen piped in. Then came the devastating news that a volunteer diver had died on his way out of the cavern.

On Saturday, with heavy rain on the way and fears carbon dioxide levels could rise, a doctor checked the boys' health and gave the all clear for the rescue, and the operation began.

  3. Why does the rescue have to pause?published at 16:51 British Summer Time 8 July 2018

Chiang Rai province acting governor Narongsak Osatanakorn talks to journalist during a news conferenceImage source, Reuters
    Image caption,

Narongsak Osatanakorn, who is heading the rescue operation, spoke at a press conference earlier

It was announced earlier that the rescue mission to bring the football team and their coach out of the cave system in northern Thailand had been paused overnight.

It may seem a surprising decision, as the rescue team had previously indicated they were in a race against time to get all 13 trapped people out.

However, Narongsak Osottanakorn, Chiang Rai province governor and head of the rescue operation, did explain it to journalists earlier - and we now have a full translation of what he said, which you can read below:

    Quote Message

We will be able to continue the rescue operation when we are ready to do so.

    Quote Message

We will be ready soon, because we will need to redo laying out all of the air tanks and all systems along the way again.

    Quote Message

We have used everything [in the set up] that we had today. The set up team will do their work again once they are ready.

    Quote Message

It'll be difficult to tell exactly when the next [evacuation] will start. But I guess it will be ready in the next 10-20 hours.''

So the rescue mission to bring the eight boys and their coach to safety is scheduled to begin again on Monday.

  6. Fifa urged to extend World Cup invite to rescuerspublished at 16:08 British Summer Time 8 July 2018

Earlier this week, Fifa president Gianni Infantino invited the boys and their football coach to watch the World Cup final in Russia next Sunday if they were released in time and healthy enough to travel.

However, people on social media seem to think that invite should be extended to the divers who are risking their lives to save the 13.

Amid the jubilation over what appears to be the successful rescue of four of the boys trapped inside the cave system, some social media users have been urging people not to forget the rescue diver who lost his life earlier this week.

Saman Gunan lost consciousness taking supplies to trapped boys and their coach on Thursday.

Here are some of the tributes paid to the ex-navy diver, who returned to help with the rescue mission:
